The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has hailed the transformative role of technical education in Ghana’s industrialization agenda during celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) on Friday.
Speaking at the silver jubilee event, Hon. Akamugri emphasized the institution’s pivotal contributions to producing skilled graduates and fostering entrepreneurship to tackle youth unemployment.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, traditional leaders, academics, and industry stakeholders.
“Twenty-five years in the life of an institution is no mere achievement,” stated Hon. Akamugri , praising BTU’s resilience in a competitive higher education landscape.
He underscored the relevance of the anniversary theme, “25 years of sustainable TVET development: Journeying to technological advancement,” aligning it with national efforts to bridge skills gaps and meet global standards.
Since its founding in 2000, BTU has carved a niche as a leader in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), equipping students with practical skills for sectors such as engineering, agriculture, and technology.
The minister noted that many alumni now excel locally and internationally, bolstering Ghana’s socio-economic growth.
Hon. Akamugri reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening TVET infrastructure and policies, urging closer ties between academia and industries.
“Collaboration among stakeholders is critical to ensuring our graduates remain competitive in an evolving technological world,” he said.
Deputy Education Minister Dr. Apaak, the event’s Special Guest of Honour, echoed these sentiments, pledging sustained investment in technical universities as engines of workforce development.
He pledged to bride the gap between academia and industry as well as pursue student welfare.
BTU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Samuel Erasmus Alnaa recounted the institution’s journey from modest beginnings to becoming a regional hub for innovation.
As part of the anniversary, BTU unveiled plans for a new 1920 student capacity lecture halls and office complex.
Closing his address, Hon. Akamugri urged continued national pride in Ghana’s educational milestones: “May this anniversary mark a transformative journey toward even greater heights. Together, we can make BTU a beacon of excellence.”
