Upper East Regional Minister Pays Condolence Visit to Bawku Naaba After Fatal Attack

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has paid a solemn visit to the Paramount Chief of the Bawku Traditional Area, Zug-Raan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, following the tragic killing of the Bongo District Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mohammed Seidu Akugri.
The late director was reportedly murdered by unknown assailants on May 19, 2025, an incident that has sparked concern and grief across the region.
Hon. Akamugri, who led a delegation from the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council and the Regional Security Coordinating Council, delivered condolences on behalf of President John Mahama and the government. He emphasized that the president had personally directed him to convey sympathies to the Bawku Naaba and to assure the traditional authorities and residents of the government’s commitment to peace and justice.
“We will plead with everybody that what has happened is not good for anybody, but we are all praying that God will answer our prayer,” said the minister. “Whatever be the case that we can do, we will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. We will ensure that, that is done for justice to be given to the young man who has passed untimely.”
Addressing security concerns, the minister disclosed that plans were underway to increase police patrols and improve the mobility of security personnel in the area to allow for quicker response to incidents. He also mentioned the need to actively engage communities, particularly in Nangodi and the Nabdam District, to prevent criminal activities and discourage the use of those areas as safe havens for lawbreakers.
“We will engage them for them to understand that it is time that the citizens of the area take interest in the matter and [be] vigilant,” he added. “If that is not checked, it can inflame passions on some people. So we have taken note of that.”
On education, Hon. Akamugri addressed concerns regarding the reopening of the Presbyterian Nurses Training College, Bawku, assuring the chief that steps have been taken to resolve related issues and facilitate the reopening of the school. A letter to that effect has already been issued, he confirmed.
In his remarks, Zug-Raan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II expressed gratitude for the minister’s visit and called for unity and collaboration to enhance the security and peace of the region.
