Upper East Regional Minister Attends Adua of Slain NHIA Director, Pledges Justice

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has assured the family and community of the late Bongo District Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mohammed Seidu Akugri, that justice will be served following his tragic killing.
Hon. Atanga was speaking during the Adua, a three-day Islamic mourning ceremony, held in Bawku to honor the late NHIA director who was shot and killed on May 19, 2025, along the Bawku-Nangodi road.
Addressing mourners, the minister conveyed the deep sorrow of President John Dramani Mahama and the government, pledging firm action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The president is putting everything in order to make sure that those who are doing this, it shouldn’t be repeated and that is exactly why I am exactly here,” the minister said. “I am here to console you and on behalf of the president plead with you — temper justice with mercy. And we are making sure that, we will make sure that those who are behind this [murder] are not gone scot-free.”
Hon. Akamugri emphasized that the entire nation, including the President, shares in the pain of the bereaved family and the community.
“We are all in pain, the president is in pain with you and we have not forgotten all that you have done for us, so we are pleading with you,” he added.
The killing of Mr. Akugri has sent shockwaves through the region, sparking calls for increased security and justice for victims of targeted attacks. He was known for his dedication to expanding healthcare access through the NHIA in the Bongo District.
Police investigations into the killing are ongoing.
