Bawku MCE Confirmed Amid Calls for Peace and Development

The Bawku Municipal Assembly has confirmed Isaac Azunaba as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) after a vote in which he secured 25 “yes” votes, two “no” votes, and one rejected ballot.
Following the confirmation, the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, addressed the assembly members, urging them to prioritize peace and development in the troubled municipality.
“For a long time now, Bawku is not in the news for a good reason. Bawku is in the news always for the bad reason,” Hon. Akamugri stated.
“And so we want to urge all of you seated here. You are the stakeholders. You in this room are the stakeholders of this area, of this municipality. So we leave it in your hands that we should try as much as possible to ensure that we give peace a chance and make sure that we develop the area.”
He emphasized that peace is the foundation for progress, saying, “When peace is available, everything can be added.”
The minister also called for restraint from actions that could further tarnish Bawku’s image, acknowledging the ongoing challenges while assuring residents of the government’s commitment to resolving them.
“We know there are difficulties, and the president has assured you that he is working at it. Sooner or later, you will have a resolution of the matter, and we can all rest,” he added.
Bawku has been plagued by recurring ethnic and chieftaincy conflicts, leading to loss of lives, displacement, and economic setbacks.
In recent days, there has been intermittent violence despite security measures, including curfews and increased military presence.
The confirmation of the MCE comes as stakeholders push for stability ahead of key developmental projects in the region.
