VICE PRESIDENT PLEDGES TO RESTORE PEACE IN BAWKU
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to restore peace in Bawku.
He said the conflict between the Kusasis and Mamprusis in Bawku led to lost of needless lives and disrupted economic activities.
He described the disturbances as “very sad.”
Dr Bawumia said this while on a ‘Thanking You Tour’ at the Palace of Bawku Naba, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.
He thanked the Paramount Chief for his prayers and support during the NPP’s Presidential Primary.
He said the country’s Constitution set out very clear guidelines for the resolution of chieftaincy disputes through the House of Chiefs, and ultimately the Supreme Court. He said violence could never resolve the chieftaincy dispute in Bawku.
The Flagbearer said he would uphold and defend Ghana’s Constitution if elected President in the upcoming December 7, 2024 general elections.
“Your Royal Highness, l am running to become President of Ghana, and l will be President for all. l will be President for Ewes, for Ashantis, for Kusasis, for Mamprusis, for Dagombas, for Frafras, Kokombas, Bonos, Fantes, and all tribes in Ghana,” he assured.
In a speech read by his Secretary, the Bawku Naba described the Vice President as a leader who demonstrated humility, respect, calmness, unity and genuine commitment which were good traits for any leadership position.
He appealed to him to take the appropriate steps to bring peace to Bawku.
“This is a task l am assigning to you and l have no doubt that you will successfully deliver it to the glory of Kusaug, Mamprugu and the nation as a whole,” he said.
Naba Azoka II said many past leaders made it clear on several occasions that the Court had settled the chieftaincy matter, and he has been affirmed as the legitimate Paramount Chief of the Kusaug Traditional Area.
He told the NPP Flagbearer that as the most Senior Northern figure of the NPP, people waited to hear from him on the matter to hopefully bring to an end the tension in Bawku.
“I have the believe if you become President, you will like to preside over a peaceful nation, peaceful Kusaug Traditional Area to support your vision for development.
“I believe that you have what it takes to bring this conflict to an end to help save lives and property,” he added.
