Upper East Region Marks Republic Day With National Prayer and Thanksgiving
The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, on Tuesday called on Ghanaians to reflect, reset and renew their commitment to peace and unity during a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day event held at the Catholic Social Centre in Bolgatanga.
The ceremony, which coincided with Ghana’s Republic Day, gathered religious leaders, traditional authorities, government officials, civil society representatives and members of the public to pray for national prosperity and unity under the theme, “Reflect, Reset and Renewal for National Prosperity.”
Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Akamugri underscored the importance of the day, describing it as a moment to remember Ghana’s full transition to a republic on July 1, 1960. He called on citizens to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s forebears and to safeguard values of honesty, peace, and patriotism.
“As a people, we need to reset our minds, priorities and rekindle our commitment to national unity, peace and shared responsibility,” Hon. Akamugri said. “Development is not only about infrastructure and policies, but also about the spiritual and moral fabric of the people.”
Atanga emphasized that the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day, introduced by the government as part of a broader “resetting agenda,” is intended to go beyond mere ritual and serve as a spiritual covenant with God. He urged Ghanaians to individually and collectively pray for peace and healing, especially in conflict-affected areas such as Bawku and Doba-Kandiga.
The minister also praised the media for their support and coverage of the event, acknowledging their role in promoting national unity.
“As the Scriptures say, ‘Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.’ May our beloved Ghana continue to be blessed,” he said.
