UPPER EAST MINISTER RECEIVES PETITION ON ILO CONVENTION

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu, has received a petition on behalf of His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on the ratification of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 190 on violence and harassment at work in Ghana under the auspice of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
The Minister said it was inappropriate for anyone to harass or abuse any person, especially at workplaces.
He said the government was concerned about the welfare of Ghanaians and cited the recent 23 percent increment in the salary of public sector workers.
According to him, the Akufo-Addo-government had created more jobs than any other government, and said there were scientific records to prove it, and urged Ghanaian workers to vote for Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia in the December 7 general elections to continue the “good works” of the government.
“If you don’t vote for him and you make mistakes, you will go back and this your request to ratify the conversation will not be done,” he said.
Madam Scholastica Tagtir Dery, the Regional Secretary of the TUC, who presented the petition after members embarked on a float on the principal streets of Bolgatanga, said available data indicated that 71.7 percent of respondents in a survey of 20,279 people, reported that they had experienced some form of violence or harassment at workplaces.
She said the survey showed that women constituted 53 percent, while persons within the age group of 22 to 35 years accounted for 67.9 percent.
The adoption of the ILO Convention was to create safer workplaces for all workers and to end Gender-Based violence.
“Like all ILO Conventions, it is only effective when ratified and properly implemented and enforced,” she said.
Madam Dery recognized the efforts of government through the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations and other stakeholders towards the ratification of the Convention 190.
