PLANS UNDERWAY TO CONSTRUCT BOLGATANGA AIRPORT- MINISTER

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu, has reiterated Government’s commitment to complete construction work on the Bolgatanga Airport at Sumbrungu, a community in the Bolgatanga Municipality.

He said some partners who were ready to support construction of the Airport, would soon arrive in the region to assess the progress of work at the site since it was abandoned several years ago.

The Minister appealed to residents to depoliticize the construction process, and shun any other issue that may hinder the region’s desire to have an Airport.

The Minister said this when he interacted with staff and management of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly as part of his working visit to the Assembly on Thursday.

He reminded residents that the Airport project, which was one of the major concerns of stakeholders, especially the traditional authority in the region had over delayed for several years, and appealed to residents to remain united for the construction work to begin.

Hon. Yakubu said the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia were in support of his effort and idea to have the Airport constructed.

On his recent visit to the proposed site at Sumbrungu, Hon. Yakubu said the road leading to the site and the runway were well shaped for the proper construction work to begin, and was hopeful that residents would soon fly directly from Bolgatanga to Accra.

Hon. Yakubu encouraged management of the Assembly to take up major projects, including the construction of shopping malls to beautify the regional capital, and generate revenue for the Assembly.

“Be ambitious and venture into bigger projects which will help the assembly to generate revenue,” the Minister told management and staff of the Assembly.

Hon. Yakubu observed that structures within the Municipality were haphazardly positioned, and hinted of a looming demolition exercise to be undertaken by the Municipal Assembly with the support of the Regional Coordinating Council.
