MINISTER LEADS 79TH REMEMBRANCE DAY CELEBRATION FOR VETERANS IN BOLGATANGA

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Alhaji Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, on Monday, joined the security service heads in Bolgatanga to commemorate the 79th Remembrance Day of departed service veterans.
In his address to mark the day, the Minister noted that the region grappled with security issues including land disputes, chieftaincy, external threats of terrorism and violent extremism.
He said residents reposed confidence and trust in the Military and other security agencies in their ability to protect the borders and prevent any possible spillover of events from neighboring countries.
“As a people, we trust the military and other security agencies to collaborate effectively in bolstering our borders to prevent the spillover of events from our neighbouring countries,” he said.
Alhaji Dr. Salih, who is the Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), further cautioned against utterances that had the tendency to distort the peace in the Region, especially as the political campaigns intensified.
He said Ghana was a beacon of peace and democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa and that it was everyone’s responsibility to protect Ghana’s image.
The Minister recognized the veterans contributions to the security and integrity of the country in their hay days, and stressed the need for them to be celebrated in their old age, and in death.
“Ghana owes you a debt that can never be fully repaid, therefore, we honour you today with utmost respect and gratitude,” he said.
Alhaji Dr. Salih laid a wreath on behalf of the Government of Ghana, the Chairman of the Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) laid one on behalf of his colleagues, one was laid by the Commander of the XII Mechanized Battalion on behalf of the Ghana Armed Forces, a representative of the traditional authorities also laid one on behalf of the chiefs and people of the region and one was laid by a widow on behalf of the widows of the veterans.
