MINISTER ADVOCATES FORMAL EDUCATION FOR FULANI CHILDREN
The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon Stephen Yakubu, has called for formal education for children of Fulani herdsmen to reduce the incidence of crime across the sub-region.
He said criminal acts involving rape and armed robbery in the country were allegedly committed by Fulanis which tarnished the image of the tribe, even though they were many decent and well educated Fulanis in the country.
The Minister said this when the Deputy Consul of Burkina Faso based in Kumasi, called on him in his office to discuss the issue of Burkinabe refugees seeking asylum in the region.
Hon Yakubu said as a result of the lack of formal education, Fulanis were lured into all sorts of criminal acts, and proposed an engagement to sensitize them on the need to enroll their children in school.
He further called for proper and effective communication between Ghana and Burkina Faso to help fight activities of Jihadists.
He said there was a large stretch of forest reserve between the two countries often used by bandits as escape route after they committed crimes in Burkina Faso, and stressed on the need for effective communication between the two countries to track them.
The Deputy Consul, Mr. Tobignare Jacque Gouba expressed his country’s appreciation to Ghana and the Minister for accommodating the refugees from his country.
He assured the Minister and residents of further collaboration between the two countries in the area of trade.
