GMMB Director Seeks Regional Minister’s Support for Cultural Preservation

The Director of the Upper East Regional Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), Prisca Naambome Yenzie, paid a courtesy call on the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, on Monday to discuss the institution’s mandate and challenges.
During the meeting, Yenzie congratulated the minister on his appointment and briefed him on the GMMB’s role in preserving cultural materials. She also outlined plans to expand the board’s presence across all five regions in the north and districts.
However, she highlighted key challenges hindering their operations, including inadequate office space, the persistent issue of encroachment on heritage sites, and the lack of a dedicated vehicle for fieldwork.
In response, Hon. Akamugri emphasized the importance of the GMMB in safeguarding Ghana’s cultural identity. He expressed concern over the institution’s current state, noting its potential as a key reference point for tourists and researchers.
The minister also lamented the growing disconnect between Ghanaian youth and their ancestral heritage. He urged the GMMB to repackage its projects and improve public engagement to attract global attention.
Hon. Akamugri assured the director that he would present her concerns to the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs for further action.
The meeting underscored the need for stronger support for cultural preservation efforts in the region.
