The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu has advocated the decentralization of relief items by development partners to timely respond to disaster situations in the Districts.
He said relief items were usually stored in the warehouse of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in Accra, and often not released on time to disaster areas.
“l think the support should be localized,” Hon Yakubu said, when officials of the World Food Programme (WFP) called on him in his office.
On the influx of refugees from Burkina Faso who flooded some communities in Ghana, Hon. Yakubu said with the support of some development partners, government and individuals, the situation was well managed and as a result, a significant number of the refugees returned to their country.
Madam Gyamila Abdul-Wahabi the Head of the WFP Sub- Office in Tamale, said the visit was to enable them get first-hand information on the displaced people.
She said per their operational standard, the number of persons of concerned must exceed five thousand before they could provide assistance.
