The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu has called for unity of purpose devoid of divisive tendencies and partisan politics to help build the country.
He said the aspirations of residents in the Region and the country depended on unity and sense of purpose, and that no nation could develop without national unity, and further urged residents to rise above needless political and sectarian differences.
Hon Yakubu, who addressed this year’s 66th Independence Anniversary parade in Bolgatanga, on the theme: “Our unity, our strength, our purpose,” urged residents to pursue common interests on matters of development in the region and county as a whole.
On natural resources in the Region, the Minister said the region was endowed with water bodies, gold deposits, arable land and human resources which when adequately tapped could position the region on higher pedestals.
To attain this enviable height, he therefore, appealed to residents to disengage from conflict and potential acts of disunity which he described as the factors which retarded the development process of the region.
He said the nature of conflicts in the Region resulted in mass exodus of skilled labour, withdrawal of donor funded projects and inability of various Assemblies to raise the needed Internally Generated Funds (IGF) for developments.
“Let me use this forum to appeal to all combatants to lay down their arms for the sake of these children who would take up the mantle of leadership in the next generation to grow in the atmosphere of peace and tranquillity,” he said.
