RCC TO ASSIST NSS VENTURE INTO RICE FARMING IN UPPER EAST

The Upper East Regional Coordinating Council (UERCC) has indicated its preparedness to assist the National Service Secretariat (NSS) in the region to go into rice farming as part its Agricultural Model.
The Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu, said there were several hectares of farm lands in the Builsa South District to help the NSS to improve and better the lots of the youth in the region.
“I want to encourage the NSS to come so that RCC will help you to get land in the Fumbisi area to either go into rice farming or any other thing. We are prepared to help,” he said.
The Regional Minister said this when he joined the Upper East Regional NSS to mark the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Secretariat in Bolgatanga.
The year long celebration started on September 1, 2023 with hoisting of the National flag at all Regional Offices across the country in remembrance of their departed staff.
Hon. Yakubu commended the various models introduced by the Secretariat, which were not available during his time of national service, and recommended a six month military training for prospective personnel.
According to him, military training would tune their mind sets to be good citizens and with the “Can do attitude.”
“After several years, the way forward to meet the most important thing is to use the NSS to change the mind sets of our youth, it will change the narrative,” he added.
The Upper East Regional Director of the NSS, Mr. Alex Opoku-Mensah noted that the Agricultural Model was implemented in other regions, and emphasized the need to replicate same in the region to reduce unemployment in the country.
He said the model would use community members in the farming activities as a way to give back to the community.
Mr. Opoku-Mensah said the Regional Secretariat was grateful for the Regional Minister’s assistance and assured him that the Secretariat would do the necessary follow ups to achieve their dream.
