LET’S PROTECT THE CONSTITUTION – AVOKA

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bawku West Constituency, Hon. Cletus Avoka has called on Ghanaians to protect the 1992 Constitution to sustain and improve development in the country.

He said coup d’ etat was not the way to go, and indicated that constitutional rule would propel development.

He added that it was the responsibility of the citizenry to ensure that the 1992 Constitution was not abrogated as experienced in previous years.

Hon. Avoka said this to commence a ‘Peace Walk’ in Bolgatanga as part of activities to mark 30 years of Ghana’s fourth republican democratic rule.

The MP, who is a pioneer of the first Parliament in the fourth republic, advised citizens to support the government to attract the accelerated development in the country, “What is attractive now is how we commit ourselves together for development in the country since coup d’etat is no more attractive to anyone,” he said.
Hon Avoka said there had been several improvements in the democratic dispensation for the past 30 years, “So parliament has grown from strength to strength, the first Parliament l was there, we did not have offices, no chamber, we were using our car boots as office and from 1993 with 200 Members of Parliament to 275 members today with library, job 600 etc so our democracy has improved,” he said.

He urged women to contest and represent their Constituents, noting that the number of female MPs was not encouraging.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu said 30 years of uninterrupted democratic rule had enormous positive impact in the country.

He said Parliament was a noble institution clothed with the authority to make laws for the country, and advised citizens to consider critically the caliber of persons they voted to represent them as their MPs.

“We need to vote for people based on their integrity and love for the region and country,” he said.

The theme for the year long celebration is “30 Years Under the Fourth Republic, the Journey Thus Far.”

The Region’s version started with Health Walk through some principal streets of in the Bolgatanga Municipality and ended with outdoor games including  football match.
