Alhaji Azonko Mahamadu Assibi was born on the 15th day of August, 1962 in Bawku in the Upper East Region.
As a son of Gold Coast Teacher, little Assibi started his primary education in Bawku and later moved to Daduri Middle Boarding School, he wrote the Common Entrance Examination and got admitted into Bawku Secondary School.
There, he studied for his GCE Ordinary level from 1976-1981 in General Science and also pursued the GCE Advanced level from 1982-1984 in General Arts both in Bawku Secondary School.
In 1985, Alhaji Azonko got admission into the premier University of Ghana where he studied Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with Psychology and successfully completed in 1988.
To quench his thirst for more knowledge in his career as an administrator, he enrolled in Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) to pursue Post Graduate Certificate in 1994 and continued with post Graduate Diploma in 1988 in the same institute.
Finally, he studied Executive Masters in Public Administration at Public Administration at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology from 2012-2014.
Alhaji Azonko as he is popularly referred to, started his public career in Administration Class Spanning from 1990 till date. After the mandatory National Service in 1989-1990.
He worked in many districts in the northern sector worth mentioning are Zabzugu, Bimbilla, Yendi, Savelugu. For the southern sector, he worked in Mpraeso, Akim Oda, Sogakope, and koforidua. Currently he is the Acting Regional Chief Co-ordinating Director at the Upper East Regional Co-ordinating Council.
Azonko also served in some important positions. He is the immediate past President of Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) from 2011-2019. He is a board member on Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) from 2013 till date.
He is also board member of Pempansie Hotel in Central Region and a member of Upper East Regional House of Chiefs because he is Divisional Chief of Gumbo in Kusaug Traditional Area.
His competence and skills include self-discipline, good inter-personal working relations, good negotiation skills and leading by example.
Chief Azonko is married with children.
